Angel Biscuits Recipe

Ingredients

 Makes about 4 dozen 2 inches size biscuits
  • 5 cups self-raising flour
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • ¾ cup vegetable shortening
  • 2 cups buttermilk, warmed
  • 1 cake or envelope yeast, dissolved in a little warm water

Method

  1. Sift together the dry ingredients. Cut in the shortening until thoroughly mixed.
  2. Add the warm buttermilk and the yeast.
  3. Work the dough together until all the flour is moistened.
  4. Cover the bowl tightly and place in the refrigerator until ready to use.
  5. Take as much dough as you need and roll out to ½ inch thick on a floured board.
  6. Cut with a biscuit cutter and place on greased baking sheets.
  7. Let the biscuits sit for an hour before baking to give them a head start on rising.
  8. Heat the oven to 400ºF and bake the biscuits for 12 to 15 minutes.
